Complete Guide To Forming A Band Part #4

What a night... a few more hrs and it's time to 'pay back' time to the stupid poolice/gahmen/watever shit u call it, like we ever owe them anything in the first place. Which friggin idiot thought of all these boring turd to waste my time man.
Anyway, i'll skip 2 parts since it's about finding the right person for the right job and some mentality thingy again. So tonight will be Part IV: 'We Need A Backline'. This section appears to be targeted for guitar players.

1) Don't panic if you only have an entry level guitar. As long as it stays in tune and doesn't buzz too much, it will do the job.

2) You'll need to have an amp at least 40 or 50 watts to really start jamming seriously. (Mm.. not too sure about this, Beez can create havoc with 15w...)

3) Make sure you choose the right amplifier for the style of music that you want to play. (For those of us who visits studios.. dun think got much choices anyway.)

4) In most circumstances, a valve amp will give you a better guitar tone. (Is it?)

String Gauge Recommendations
Metal: Custom Lights 9-46
Punk/Hard Rock: Medium 10-46
Pop/Light Rock: Lights 9-42
Country: Custom Lights 10-46
Blues/Jazz: Heavy 11-52

The rest are quite a handful to summarize... so... decided not to summarize. Can go get the mag in local bookshops. Weird... but i think i still see it in smoe bookshops. Really...

Ai Tai Mei!

Lorry!

Lorry broke down after three hours of jamming on a certain week night. Forgotten to off the headlight, hence.....Ivor N' Gang were nice enough to help! The blood of the band runs strong..I truly enjoy the friendship of the band. These are rare people trying to make their mark in music together, and create a world of melody for people to enjoy. Cheers to the world's richest band, for when there's friendship, there's richness in the melody.

* this is a LATE entry. Vocalist been nagging. :)

Enjoy true Elyzia-stic fun! The Lorry Incident.

Complete Guide To Forming A Band Part #3

Mm.. this chapter might be a bit long. Most of it, i feel that it is a mentality thing. But then again, mentality really also depends on character, life experiences and alot of (individual or not) circumstances within or out of our control. Anyway, here comes Part III: 'It's All About Compromise'

1) When it's at its best, making music is give and take. Make sure every member of the band is doing both.

2) Be prepared to accept compromises, and be prepared to have your ideas changed, and even occasionally shot down in flames.

3) Rotate the dominant role from song to song - give everyone in the band their chance to shine.

Vox
- People who sing out of time are surprisingly rare. People who sing out of tune are more common. Bad vocalists go flat, particularly on long notes.
- Good vocalists will be aware that they don't have to stick the microphone halfway down their throat & scream.
- Vox will most likely be the centre of attention on stage. Charisma is at least as important as singing ability.
- Don't forget how important the right attitude is in rock n'roll these days. Let your frontgal plat that role if they want.

Guitarists
- Have a tendency to play over the top of everyone else.
- Good guitarists will leave alot of space in their parts.
- Tend to fall prey to gear addiction. (Hahahahaha, not only guitarist la c'mon..)

Bassists
- Too many bassists just want to stick to the root notes and double up the guitar.
- Good bassists plays with lots of movements and add in good joining phrases.

Drummers
- Most important thing about a drummer is keeping time.
- Good drummers play right on top of the beat, really looks to drive the song along, rather than just tapping in the background.
- Key to a solid rhythm section is how they lock their bass drum in with the bassist.

'You know the hardest thing is when egos get big, and it's hard to just be like "Don't play that." Like to actually be able to say "Shut up. That is wanking. It's not helping the song." - Cam Muncey (Jet)

Complete Guide To Forming A Band Part #2

Well, here goes Part Deux: 'Different Strokes'

Jizz of it, things to remember...

1) Make sure everyone wants the same out of making music, whether that be a serious career or abit of fun on Sunday. You don't want to put in all the hardwork and then realize that you're all doing for different reasons.

2) Work out what's important to each member of the band, be that live work, writing abd recording or just picking up chicks (That's exactly what the mag wrote hor...)

3) Agree on a style of music, or even better, agree that you don't want to be put into a stylistic pigeonhole.

4) Remeber that your influences are important, but there's no glory in imitating your heroes.

Everything in the music industry these days are broken up into little fractured groups, and artistes are all put into whatever group fits them best. Generally, it's the record companies that create the little fractured groups - they call them target markets. Then it's the media that decide which target market a certain artist will be sold to - they call it criticism.
Even so, most bands just play music when they're alone in the jam room. The good ones - the ones that don't get caught in the little target market tango - are the bands that can just play music when they get out of the jam room as well.

'We all have heroes, musical and otherwise, but there's nothing worse than when we just blindly imitate those people' - Jane's Addiction

Complete Guide To Forming A Band Part #1

Rest time @ 12am... Flippin' thru a mag bought 3 yrs ago for AUD9.95 titled 'Complete Guide To Forming A Band'. Tot some of the pointers quite helpful. Here goes citation Part #1 - 'For Those About To Rock'

1) Being in a band is pretty much like being married to 3 other ppl.
2) Better to form a band with friends than the hotshot blazing his guitar licks @ the local guitar shop
3) Only a friendly band environment will allow the creative compromises and cross fertilisation needed to make great music.
4) Remember, being in a band is suppose to be fun!

At some pt, being in a band is going to become a creative output. You'll be in a situation where you have to all put your ideas into a great mixing pot, and pull something useful out of it. It's gonna take compromises, and egoes are going to have to be swallowed (or seriously bruised)
If you don't have a good personal relationship with the ppl in your band, you're never going to be able to write a song because nobody will be able to accept other ppl's ideas without getting hurt or ticked off.

'I get to hang out with my best mates and travel around the world playing music. Nothing else really matters' - Nick Valencia (The Strokes)
